Early Medieval stone lid

Fragment from a disc of Old Red Sandstone. Many other frags of Sandstone slabs of comparable thickness were found on the site and in the numerical analysis htese have been treated as bakestones. This is the only piece which provides any evidence of the size and shape to which these slabs might be worked, and it must be admitted that it seems too small to make a satisfactory bakestone. Some of the other fragments, however were considerably larger than this and showed signs of burning, so they may well have come from bakestone. The present piece may be a pot lid.
