Roman copper alloy trulleus

fragmentary, nearly complete. The fragmentary handle is decorated with a thyrsolonchus motif typical of an Eggers (1951) type E 139 trulleus of, probably, Gaulish manufacture, dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD (Den Boesterd, 1956, p.9, Plate II, no. 24 and 24a). The highly fragmentary rim, body and base fragments have heavily tinned internal surfaces (rim and body fragments. The handle has a more typical copper carbonate green colouration with patched of possible azurite corrosion product.

Find Information

Site Name: Llantrisant Fawr, Monmouthshire

Collection Method: metal detector
Date: 2019 / March / 09

Notes: Its fragmentation, and the discovery of its handle about two inches below the upper trulleus (/1) suggests that the complete trulleus (/1) had been nested within the, larger diameter, fragmentary trulleus (/2).
