Roman copper alloy trulleus

Well preserved Roman copper alloy trulleus of the variety of the so-called Godäker type, Phase II. It presents a base decorated with concentric rings, a lipped rim, below which is a ornament band of highly stylized floral, and a flat, integral handle pierced by a circular hole and decorated with two concentric rings and floreal incisions. The handle is stamped with the names of the Gaulish manufacturer Maturus and of the First Thracian cavalry regiment (Ala I Thracum). The Ala I Thracum may have been garrisoned with the Second Augustan Legion at Isca in the early years. It would have added a strong cavalry element to the capabilities of the legion. Found in a well of an officer’s house, on the Museum site. 1st century A.D.
