M.V. GRESHAM (2578gt). Built 1923 as MARGRETIAN by Charles Hill & Son Ltd., Bristol, for Owen & Watkin Williams& Co., Cardiff (the Golden Cross Line). She was originally powered by two 6-cylinder oil engines by Wm. Beardmore & Co Ltd., Glasgow driving twin screws. Laid up at Cardiff from June 1925. 1928 Sold to Stewart & Esplen Ltd., London, and renamed GRESHAM. 1930 – Ownership transferred to Gresham Shipping Co Ltd., London, and re-engined with two 6-cylinder oil engines by Maschinfabrik Augsberg-Nurnberg AG, Augsberg, Germany. Laid up at Blyth from 1933, she set sail for West Africa in August 1936 but had to towed to Lisbon due to engine failure. 1937 – Sold to Th. Brovig, Farsund, Norway, and renamed BALLA. On an occasion in 1941, she ran out of fuel and completed her journey to Houston under sail made from hatch cloths. In 1948, she was re-engined again with a 6-cylinder oil engine by General Machinery Corp., of Hamilton, Ohio, and converted to single screw propulsion. 1961 Sold to Transportacion Maritima Mexicana SA., Piso, Mexico and renamed GUADALAJARA. Deleted from Lloyds Registers in 1969, she was probably broken up around then. (Source: The Golden Cross Line by David Jenkins.)
