Hollowing knife

A specialist knife used by a clogmaker for hollowig the upper side and edges of the wooden sole. It was used after rough shaping using the stock knife. The curved blade is forged onto a long iron bar. At one end of the bars is a wooden handle. The other end of the bar has been shaped into a hook, which was attached to an iron ring on the clogmaker's bench. The clogmaker held the wooden handle in one hand and the clog sole in the other on the bench. The iron ring held the knife in place on the bench and enabled it to be used in a lever motion to shape the sole.

Shaping, hollowing and mortising knives used by clogmakers for shaping the wooden soles. The hook on the end fitted into a ring on the wooden bench. The clogmaker used the knife with one hand and held the sole in the other.
