Roman stone funerary finial
Ovoid finial on a squared base.
Ovoid Finial. Originally from a funerary monument.
Ovoids of this type often bear an incised criss-cross or spiral marking suggestive of the scales of a pine-cone, and are generally held to be associated with burial or cremation. One reason for this is because the pine-cone came from an evergreen tree and so linked with immortality.
Terfyniad Hirgrwn. O gofeb angladdol yn wreiddiol.
