Sampler

Morgan, Margaret (Embroiderer)

Woollen canvas, embroidered with coloured silks in cross, stem, satin, laid and dot stitches and French knots. There are three illustrations of Bible stories: the first inscribed “1. Kings, 17 Chap. 5V.” is Elijah fed by ravens; the second, the finding of Moses; while the third depicts the flight into Egypt. There is also a scene depicting a woman dressed in the costume of the late 'thirties, holding a birch, and apparently scolding a girl. The girl is seated and holds a corner of her apron to her eyes. The remaining space contains a number of detached designs birds on trees, butterflies, flowers, a balloon containing two passengers, and the verse:

There is an hour when I must die. Nor can I tell how soon twill come. A thousand children young as I. Are called by death to hear their doom.

At the top, within a floral compartment, is the inscription: Margaret Morgan Aged 14 / Years 1839. S. Westbrook's School .

On two sides there is a border of a wavy stem with pansies, honeysuckle, rosebuds and other flowers.
