The Cravos family were natives of Trieste where they owned a number of sailing vessels. They later moved to Cardiff, becoming shipowners at the port in 1914. The 4,576 gross ton steamer Ampleforth was built at Stockton-on-Tees in 1929 as Glofield for Humphries & Co. of Cardiff and was bought by Cravos in 1932. Seen here arriving at Cardiff, c.1936, she was torpedoed and sunk in the north Atlantic on 18 August 1940. S.S. AMPLEFORTH (4576 gt). Built at Stockton-on-Tees in 1929 as GLOFIELD for Humphries & Co. of Cardiff and was bought by Cravos in 1932. Torpedoed and sunk by U-101 west of the Hebrides at 0154 on 18 August 1940. She was a straggler from Convoy OA-199. Nine crew members were lost. The master and 28 other survivors were rescued by the destroyer HMS WARWICK and taken to Liverpool.
