Port broadside view of S.S. AMPLEFORTH, about 1936.
The Cravos family were natives of Trieste where they owned a number of sailing vessels. They later moved to Cardiff, becoming shipowners at the port in 1914. The 4,576 gross ton steamer Ampleforth was built at Stockton-on-Tees in 1929 as Glofield for Humphries & Co. of Cardiff and was bought by Cravos in 1932. Seen here arriving at Cardiff, c.1936, she was torpedoed and sunk in the north Atlantic on 18 August 1940.
