The ‘Domestic Chaplain’ is the sweetly innocent boy reading the Bible to his ailing mother or sister in bed. It is typical of the sentimental scenes of everyday life, popular among the Victorian middle class. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869, it was bought by Fred Piggott, a mining engineer and hung in his house ‘The Beeches’ near Caerphilly.
