T shirt
Pink cotton jersey t-shirt promoting the BBC Radio Cymru programme 'Helo Bobol' - the first programme to be aired on BBC Radio Cymru on 3 January 1977. Round neck, short sleeves. Logo on chest printed in black. The seventies witnessed an important development in BBC Cymru Wales’s radio service with the launch of two national radio stations.
In 1977, the decision was taken to offer a choice in Wales’s opt-out from Radio Four, with English on the medium wave and Welsh on VHF. The division became complete with the creation of Radio Cymru, the first designated Welsh-medium radio service in 1977 followed by the creation of Radio Wales in 1978.
Radio Cymru was broadcast exclusively using FM on VHF. At the time many listeners didn’t have suitable radio sets to receive the service, which led to a BBC campaign persuading Welsh speakers to buy VHF sets.
Radio Cymru and Radio Wales soon made an impact and are now a central part of the broadcasting landscape of Wales.
