Dorelia McNeil in a feathered Hat

JOHN, Augustus (Artist)

John met Dorelia early in 1903, probably through his sister Gwen, whom she accompanied on a walking holiday in France in 1903-04. After Ida John's death, Dorelia became the artist's common-law wife and his most ubiquitous model, painted repeatedly over a period of nearly sixty years. This early portrait of her dates from 1903 or 1904.
