Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Petticoat, red stripes on black ground, made from tabby woven wool; c. 0.5cm wide stripe [6 picks] alternating with 1.5cm wide stripe (itself consisting of 2 thicker stripes [4 picks] on outside and 2 thin stripes [1 pick only] on inside). Upper edge pleated into waistband. Waistband = tabby-woven cotton; thin white check on blue ground. Short section of waistband replaced by different cotton fabric: red and blue stripes on white ground; stripes are also distinguished by changing from tabby to twill weave. Stitching thread = green-brown (faded from black?), S-twist. 27.5cm long slit with 2 black painted steel hook and eye fastening. Thread attaching hooks & eyes is different from thread used elsewhere & seems much newer (black cotton, Z-twist). - there are remains of older thread near the current hooks and eyes, but in only one position towards the centre of the waistband; this suggests that the petticoat was originally fastened at only one point and that the current hooks and loops must be a later addition. Constructed from 4 full widths of fabric (4 vertical seams along selvages). (i.e. full width of woven fabric = 60cm)
