Early Medieval human remains
These are remains from the Inhumation Burial of a Younger Middle Adult (25-35 years) who's sex is Undetermined The remains are very well preserved with over 75% remaining.
They were 168.13cm tall (5 foot 6.2inches) They were buried in an extended supine position in a simple grave oriented West-East.
The burial is from Phase J: 801-1052 AD
Their bones showed evidence for a range of conditions. Cribia Orbitalia within the cranium can indicate nurtitional deficiencies or ill health during childhood. Spinal Degenerative Joint Disease and Schmorls Nodes indicate heavy wear on the individual's joints. Enthesophytes, Erosive Lesions and Osteochondritis Dissecans are all indicators of trauma or more heavy wear on the individual's joints. Thier cranium also had a Button Osteoma.
Fragments of Early Medieval Pottery (2025.7H/1.60), a Prehistoric Flint Awl (2025.7H/3.84) and Vole bones (2025.7H/8.40) were recovered from the fill of this burial. Flint and animal bones occur quite commonly within the soil used to fill many of the graves.
