Roman copper alloy cheekpiece from helmet

Part of a bronze mask from a parade helmet, probably belonging to a legionary horseman. 3rd century A.D. Two fragment of thin sheet with rivet-hole. One edge is turned up and the other shows traces of shaping by cutting. Buch-type cheek-piece. The cheek-pieces were originally lined to protect the face. A pair of these were hinged to either side of the helmet rim, and fastened under the chin. They protected the ears and cheeks and were called bucculae. This fragment of thin sheet presents a rivet-hole, one edge is turned up and the other shows traces of shaping by cutting.
