Roman lead baggage label
The baggage label has a small perforated hole near the left hand edge and inscribed with a sharp point on both sides. The writing on the one side is inverted with respect to the other so that the hole remains on the left. The tags were evidently attached to a package or bundle (sarcina) and record the package number (probably corresponding to a serial number on a separate check-list) weight in pounds, value in denarii, indicated by the sign 'X' and presumably the contents.
