M.V MARIANNE, glass negative

Starboard Broadside view of M.V MARIANNE, at Cardiff Dock, 19 December 1947.

(3201gt) : Laid down 1942 by Bergens Mekaniske Verksted as a vessel commisssioned by the Germans (no other details known), but completed 1947 as MARIANNE for Eilert Lund Rederi A/S. It is thought that the 8-cylinder Krupp diesel engine was sabotaged during the build, which led to problems from the beginning. Terminal engine damage in 1960 saw the ship towed to Mobile, Alabama, and laid up in a shipyard for 3 months. 1961 Towed to Valencia, Spain, and re-engined with a new 2650 bhp Gotaverken diesel. 1969 Renamed GUNNY in January, following the purchase of a new MARIANNE by Eilert Lund. She was sold in the April to Sincere Navigation Co Ltd., Hong Kong, and renamed PROSPERITY. 1973 Sold to Mariner Shipping Agency, Mogadishu, and renamed MARINER ALPHA. 1977 Sold to Cityship Panama Ltd., Panama, and renamed TUNG HING. On 9th June 1977, there was a fire on board in the Sunda Straits, Indonesia, while on a voyage from Bangkok to Port Harcourt. The vessel was abandoned the next day, and later sank. (warsailors)(Eilert Lund)
