Iron frying pan with folding handle. (3rd century A.D.) The iron pan has an oval outline coming to a point at the front. At the back it has a short projecting flange with upturned sides between which runs a pivot about which is rolled the end of the strip handle. This is now folded forward across the body of the pan with the remains of a collar around it near the pivot. In use the collar slipped over the projection which extends behind the pivot to hold the handle firm.
Pans of this type were widely used throughout the Roman world, although, somewhat surprisingly, they do not appear to be found in military contexts despite their apparent suitability for use on campaign.
