Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Built up of five tiers of sheet copper alloy rivetted together with conical-headed rivets. The topmost tier forms the shoulder, everted flange and rim. The angle formed by the shoulder and flange is reinforced with a tube of heavier metal, over which the plate has been bent. Two ring-handles are held to the cauldron by means of grooved staples cast direct on to the flange. The lip is worn as though by placing the cauldron mouth downwards; also, the bottom is compressed and damaged.
This cauldron could hold about 50 litres of stew, enough to feed 30-50 people. It was suspended by its handles over a fire during special feasting events. It was designed to impress. Sheets of bronze were hammered to shape by hand, then carefully riveted together.
