Incomplete window pane, formed by three fragments restored.
Roman window glass was made by being either blown or cast. Blown panes were created from a long blown cylinder, then cut and flattened. Cast panes were poured over wooden moulds and then polished on one side to remove the impression of the grain of wood.
This pane comes from the civilian settlement outside Caerleon Roman Fortress. Fragments of window panes are common on this site, but this is the only example of a near complete pane.
The glass has been grozed (trimmed) on the original edges. Giving a width of 12cm to the pane. It is 2-3mm thick.
