View of Meaux

Michel was one of the earliest nineteenth-century French landscape artists to reject the neo-classical traditions of academic art and concentrate on natural atmospheric effects. He was inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch landscapes rather than Italianate sources and became an important precursor to the Barbizon School.
