Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
A small, complete, crucible or cupel; hemispherical with slightly flattened base and pinched spout. Nearly vitrified surfaces; internally some slag-glaze at internal base, above which walls are covered with a fine 'mist' of golden spherules. Probably used for purifying and/or melting gold. Preliminary X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (Lewis, M., 2021) showed the significant presence of gold and lead, suggesting possible use for cupellation.
The five major spectral lines present were Fe K12 (iron from the soil), Au L1 (gold spherules), Au M1 (gold spherules), Pb L1 and Pb M1 (lead at, and/or near, the cupel/crucuble surface) with instrument settings of 40kV and 10 micro-Amps for 104 seconds with a Titanium filter.
