In about 1870 Whaite acquired a cottage near Conwy where he lived for the rest of his life. He was one of a number af artists in the area, who formed the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1882, and became its first President in 1885. He showed this painting and its pendant, 'The Shepherd's Dream', in the Cambrian Academy's Cardiff Exhibition in 1885. These were cut down and reworked fron his rejected Royal Academy picture of 1865, 'The Penitent's Vision'. An illustration of 'The Pilgrim's Progress', it depicts Christ freeing Christian from the net cast by the false prophet.
