Cow-creamer and cover

Baker, Bevans and Irwin, Glamorgan Pottery (1813-1839)

Cow-creamer and cover ,earthenware, in the shape of a cow, standing on a rounded oblong base, moulded around the edges to resemble foliage, the cow, with cloven hooves, an udder with four teats, a realistically modelled body with prominent breast bone, two curved horns above the ears, the spout formed by the animal's open mouth, the handle formed by the tail looped over the cow's back, the cover, ovoid, forming part of the backbone; transfer printed in black with to one side of the body a scene of a rustic landscape showing several figures in a boat on a river with a thatched building and a bird-house on a post to one side, further buildings, trees and a bridge in the background, to the other side of the body another scene of a rustic landscape showing two figures fishing in a river with a well to one side and a building and trees to the other, to the base of the cow-creamer a smaller rustic scene showing a cottage and trees by the side of a river, a scaled down version of the same scene to the cover, the horns, forehead, mouth, hooves and tip of the tail of the cow all painted in black, a black band around the edge of the base.
