In 1930, the Football League banned English clubs from releasing Welsh players on Saturdays. A national team was cobbled together using Welsh club players and three amateurs. Walter Robbins and another Cardiff City legend, Fred Keenor, were chosen. The team were dubbed ‘the Unknowns', but they created quite an upset when they held Scotland to a 1-1 draw in 1930. Walter was awarded this football cap on this day.

Football cap of green silk velvet awarded to Walter Robins. Crown constructed from six triangular sections with the seams being covered by metal braid. In the centre is a velvet-covered button. Gold-coloured rope of metal thread is wrapped around button and at the end of it is a tassel of gold-colored metallic purl. Cap is embroidered with metal thread (centre front: FAW). Below: a Welsh lion embroidered in red and black silk. Peak is dated 1930-1. Lined with brown cotton sateen. Towards the centre of the crown the lining is pleated to accommodate the narrowing shape. It is stitched to a flat oval section of fabric. A white cotton tape is stitched across this central oval (side to side). Peak is stiffened with card.
