Early Medieval human remains
These are remains from the Inhumation Burial of a Younger Middle Adult (25-35 years) who was probably Male The remains are moderately preserved with around 75% remaining.
He was buried in an extended supine position oriented West-East in a Cist grave lined with stones. SK268 lies next to and parralel with SK269, from the earlier phase D. The skull of SK269 is turned to the right, facing this individual, this may not be deliberate and could be the result of a later disturbance to the grave.
The burial is from Phase G: 771-894 AD
His teeth had Calculus and Caries. They also showed Dental Enamel Hypoplasia, indicating a period of interrupted growth during childhood. His bones showed Degenerative Joint Disease, Enthesophytes, Schmorl's Nodes and Osteochondritis Dissecans. These are all joint conditions that can indicate heavy wear from repeated manual labour or in some cases direct trauma.
