Cross-stitch embroidery on linen canvas ground in original frame. Mainly wool with details picked out in loosely spun silk thread. The silk cross-stitches are stitched over the wool embroidery. In some areas only one half of each cross stitch is executed in silk. Canvas is completely covered by stitches apart from central rectangle with four lines of text in black tightly twisted silk. Above: rectangle with alphabeth and numbers and below. Small rectangle inscribed: 'Sarah Williams Work Ag. 16 18..' Stylised floral motifs, also flowers in vases and baskets and two birds - all on a background of black.
Wooden frame, narrow gilt strips of wood are placed onto the edges of the textile, the glazing is then placed over these strips and held in place by the outer wooden frame (not gilt).
