Snow is visible on the ground in Penarth as the 347 gross ton steam coaster Thorn manoeuvres off the entrance to the Queen Alexandra Dock, c. 1947. Built at Bowling in 1934, she was owned by Joseph Fisher of Newry. This company was established with a fleet of sailing vessels in 1852, and they acquired their first steamer in 1889. The Fisher company was eventually taken over by the Belfast fuel factors, Cawoods, in 1966.

ss THORN (347gt) : Built 1934 (but looks a lot older) by Scott & Son, Bowling (engine by Aitchison & Blair, Clydebank) for Newry & Kilkeel Steamship Co. (Joseph Fisher & Sons). 1954 – Sold to Hay & Son, Lerwick, and renamed COLUMBINE (managed by W.N.Lindsay, Leith). She ran aground and was wrecked on 24th December 1957, at North Head, Peterhead.
