M.V. GEESTCAPE, negative

Hansen, Leslie W.

Starboard bow view of M.V. GEESTCAPE at Barry Docks.

Since 1956 the port of Barry has been associated with the Geest Line and its service to the Windward Islands. This service was operated with chartered tonnage for some years before the decision was taken to acquire tonnage in 1964. The Geestcape was a 7,679 gross ton refrigerated motor vessel, built at Greenock in 1966 and seen here in the No. 2 Dock at Barry, c. 1972. She was sold to French owners in 1975. Geest's association with Barry was sadly terminated early in 1993.

Refrigerated cargo vessel built 1966 by Scotts’ Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. (formerly Greenock Dockyard Co Ltd) for Geest Industries Ltd., Boston. 1975 – Sold to Cie. Franco-Camerounaise de Navigation SA , Dunkerque and renamed NYOMBE (managed by L. Martin & Cie). 1981 – Sold to Reefer Services Co. Ltd., Nassau, and renamed TURTLE. She sank off Ile de Sein on 16 October 1983 following an explosion and fire in No.5 hold. She had been under tow from Le Havre to Almeria with general cargo when she encountered heavy weather. One life – a firefighter – was lost.
