George Medal awarded to Norman Groom.
On 19 August 1940 a lone German Ju-88 bomber attacked the Royal Naval fuel depot at Llanreath, near Pembroke Dock. The resulting fire, fought by 650 firemen from 22 brigades, burned for nearly three weeks. Five Cardiff firemen were killed. Leading Fireman Groom, Cardiff AFS, won one of 13 George Medals, for ‘great zeal and devotion to duty’ at ‘grave risk of personal injury’.
