Medieval iron hammer

A claw hammer head. The item is substantially corroded around the head rendering it difficult to see the exact shape of the original hammer, although the socket and round hammer head are visible.

X-Rays revealed a fuller image of the object, showing it has incomplete flat claws and a central eye hole through which a nail had been driven to connect the head more firmly to the (now lost) wooden shaft. The socket for holding the wooden haft in place is unusually deep and doesn't seem to have been very effective, hence the need to drive an additional nail to hold the loose haft more firmly.

C18 (Site A) Feature associated drying kiln C3, 13th Century.
