B.R. 0-6-2T locomotive No.40 with coal wagons at Walnut Tree Junction, viewed from Taffs Well Station looking south. The former Rhymney Railway on the left joined the former Taff Vale Railway main line. The east abutment of Cardiff Road overbridge can be glimpsed in the background. Walnut Tree Junction Signal Box is on the right. The ascending empty siding in the centre beyond the fence possessed a sand drag to catch potential runaway vehicles descending the Rhymney line. The vehicles beyond the sand drag are in sidings associated with the former Rhymney Railway Raffs Well Goods Station. The building on the left mostly obscured by smoke with the word ‘Ltd’ visible, had been the Rhymney Railway’s Walnut Tree Engine Shed from 1860 until 1922.
