Booklet for BBC schools service broadcasting in Wales, 'Early Stages in Welsh', autumn term 1947. School radio programmes in Wales were broadcast from Cardiff and Swansea during the 1920s, but came to an end in 1929 – the BBC in London argued there wasn’t enough uptake to warrant a schools service in Wales. However, pressure upon the BBC from inside Wales to bring back a Welsh ‘regional’ schools’ service eventually led to the establishment of a Welsh sub-committee for Schools Broadcasting in 1932. Radio returned to the classrooms of Wales. Programmes covered diverse topics including Welsh history, nature and crafts, with accompanying booklets for children to use and advice for teachers on how to run the programme – but also how to get the best radio reception. By 1937, as many as 460 schools in Wales were regularly receiving up to 100 broadcasts a year.
