Patchwork piece made from printed cotton using the log cabin technique. The pattern is made of a number of measured strips of material divided into light and dark shades. Wiithin each square the light and dark shades are divided diagonally. The diagonally opposing pieces largely mirror each other in the use of colours/fabrics.
The pattern was worked from the centre outwards; a strip was placed face down onto a backing of plain tabby woven cotton and stitched in place with running stitches using white cotton thread (S-twist). It was then folded back and the next piece was placed on top of it (again, face down) and the stitches holding the inside edge of the new strip simultaneously secure the outer edge of the first strip) and so on. Tacking stitches remain in all four centres. All four squares were worked on an individual square of lining. The finished squares were joined together at the end of the process using large tacking stitches.
