Wirephoto published in the Tribune newspaper in 1938. Purchased by David Hurn from MMG Photo Archives.

Full title: Rescue attempt that failed. Would-be rescuers of John Ward (indicated by arrow as he stood on ledge) who leaped to death tonight, were raising this net toward his 17th floor perch when he jumped. When ward saw the net approaching and saw men coming down ropes from the floor above he jumped. The body missed the net, passing just to the left of it, struck a marquee on the way down and landed in the street.

The photograph is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the librarian of the Baltimore Sun Archives Paul M McCardell.
