Sampler

Lewis, Mary (Embroiderer)

WOOLLEN CANVAS, embroidered with coloured silks in cross stitch. At the top is the following inscription: "Forget not thy helpless infancy, nor the / frowardness of thy youth and indulge / the infirmities of thy aged parents, assist / and support them in the decline of life. / So shall their hoary heads go down to / the grave in peace, and thine own chilidren in reverence of thy example shall / repay thy piety with filial love. / Mary Lewis aged Nine Years 1797". At the bottom is a house flanked by two trees, a dog and a stag. There is a continuous border of a wavy floral stem. From Llanfair-caereinion, Montgomeryshire.
