River at Penegoes
Wilson was born and brought up at Penegoes where his father was rector, so it is likely that he would have painted a view of the area. The label on the reverse states that the artist presented the painting to his friend Paul Sandby in 1758, one year after Wilson's return from Italy. However the naïve style of painting and presence of an earlier underlying composition of a man spearing a lion, which is otherwise unknown in Wilson's oeuvre, makes it hard to accept as by his hand.
