Threashing flail used to separate the ears of grain from the straw – the chaff. The grain was then milled and the chaff cut. 1850s.
Threshing is separating the grain from the stalks. When carried out by traditional hand methods using an implement called the flail, threshing was a slow, unpleasant and laborious process that could occupy farm labourers for months over the winter period.
