Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Pointed ovate handaxe, with plano-convex longitudinal section. Areas of characteristic cortex remain on the dorsal surface of the flake on which it is made. Heavily patinated, slightly rolled, but otherwise undamaged. The piece has a heavy white patina.
Flint handaxe found on a cliff at Rhossilli, Gower peninsula. This flint tool was used for butchery about 300,000 years ago.
SC6.1
Site Name: Rhossili, Gower
Notes: The absence of iron staining indicates that the handaxe has not been in a river deposit. It was probably resting on the surface before incorporation into last glaciation deposits (which form the cliffs at Rhossili), before deposition by wave erosion on the beach.
