Christ the Redeemer
The Florentine Granacci was a student of Ghirlandaio and a friend of Michelangelo. This work and three other small panels in Oxford probably once decorated the sides of an altarpiece of c.1520. Christ's blood is shown pouring into a communion chalice to redeem mankind. The panel was purchased by the Reverend John Sanford and, on account of its subject matter, re-used as the door of the Florentine marble tabernacle which he installed at Nynehead parish church in 1833 (Accession Number: NMW A 236).
