Sampler
Woollen canvas, embroidered with coloured silks in cross, satin, chain, laid and other stitches. Divided horizontally into two compartments: the upper one containing a recumbent stag with fawn between two trees, conventional trees, flowering plants in vases, birds and a temple, the lower containing a house behind a fence with trees and flower bed, an arbour with climbing flowering plants, a castle, a seascape with ships (one sinking) and men in foreground, conventional trees, butterfly and flowers, a floral wavy stem and the verse: "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand / As the first effort of an infants hand / And while her fingers on the Canvas move / Enlarge her tender heart to seek thy love." At the bottom is the inscription: "Mary Lewis 1824”.
