ss. ZELO (2249gt) : Built 1921 by S.P. Austin & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, for Pelton Steamship Co. Ltd., Newcastle. Collided with trawler DILYS in thick fog just off the Eddystone Light on the 17 September 1932. As the trawler had begun to sink, the ZELO took off her master and crew and tried to tow the vessel to Plymouth, but had to abandon the attempt. 1939 – Chartered and modified to raise the submarine HMS THETIS after it sank in Liverpool Bay while on sea trials with a loss of 99 lives (only 4 escaped). The submarine was subsequently beached at Moelfre Bay, Anglesey. ZELO also survived damage by German bombing off Sunk Light Vessel on 19 January 1941 . 1955 – Sold to Greek-owned Santa Barbara Cia de Nav., SA, Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and renamed KYRIAKOULA, managed by J & E Katsoulakos. 1964 – Sold to Conisen Shipping SA, Panama, and renamed PITSA. She was broken up at Perama, Greece in 1965. (searlecanada.org // the sunderland site)
