Joseph Parry was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1841, one of 7 children. At the age of nine, he worked in the coalmines to help support his family. They emigrated to Pennsylvania, USA, in 1854. Nineteen years later, he became Professor of Music at the University College, Aberystwyth.
