The "Black Colliers" Funeral. In 1920 Fred Gill the local miners' leader died and the colliers of Park and Dare collieries requested permission to leave early to attend his funeral. Local management regarded him as an anarchist and refused permission. The colliers accordingly turned up in their pit clothes at the graveside to pay their homage.
