Poster

Spurrell, William (Printer)

Reward poster for £500 for the capture of Rebecca's daughters, who attacked Gelliwernen farmhouse in 1843.

This poster offers a reward of £500 to anyone who could provide information about the violent attack on Gelliwernen. We do not know if anyone provided the authorities with information, but it is highly likely that no one did. Rebecca's followers were very loyal to her and the majority of all ordinary people sympathised with her causes. Rebecca was very good at intimidating people.

The poster shows how seriously the authorities were now beginning to see Rebecca. It shows that Rebecca was diversifying her targets. Not only was she attacking toll houses and gates, but also workhouses, farmhouses and people. Anyone and anything who had power and control over the oridinary people.
