RIBOT, Augustin-Theodule (1823-1891)
Born in Normandy, Ribot came to Paris in 1851 and became friendly with Francois Bonvin. He exhibited at the Salon from 1861 and was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1878. His realist genre scenes reveal the influence of the Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera (1590-1652). In 1913 Sir Frederick Wedmore lent this work to the Cardiff Loan Exhibition. He praised Ribot especially for profound 'understanding of the complexities of the old allied with understanding of the intelligent simplicities of the young'.
