Rake made of ash and cane. Made by William Thomas of Llanymawddwy, mid Wales, 1955.
William Thomas was a country carpenter who specialised in rakemaking. He was the third generation rakemaker in his family. He would take a cartload of rakes to the fair at Machynlleth, to sell them to farmers for the hay harvest. William was still making rakes in the early 1960s, when he was over 90 years old. By then, mechanisation had reduced the demand for them.
