British School (Artist)

Head and shoulders portrait in oils of William Spiller, wearing his Welsh International shirt. Unglazed. In gilded wooden frame with presentation plaque and carved decoration around edge. "Presented to W. Spiller, by a few friends, in commemoration of his attaining his Welsh Cap. 26th April 1911."

William (Billy) Spiller played rugby for Cardiff (184 games 1905-6 to 1913-14; captain 1912-13) and he also played for Pontypridd; Barry; Glamorgan Police; Glamorgan County. He won 10 caps at centre for Wales 1910-1913. His first cap was against Scotland at Cardiff 5 February 1910. Wales won 14-0 (Spiller scored a try on his debut). As well as rugby, he played cricket, with 13 First Class games for Glamorgan 1921-1923 and was the first Glamorgan player to score a First Class century in 1921. He also played bowls for Glamorgan.
