It was in 1936 that John Lovering established the company of Lovering & Sons to acquire the Dutch-built motor coaster Calyx. He later acquired further efficient Dutch motor coasters such as the 353 gross ton Comel, built at Westerbroek in 1938. She is seen here arriving at Cardiff in 1949. M.V. CORNEL. Built 1938 by E.J.Smit & Zoon Scheepswerven, Kinderdijk, Rotterdam, for Lovering & Sons, Cardiff. In 1955, she was re-fitted with a 6-cylinder Crossley diesel engine of 1944 vintage. 1957 – Sold to Rose Line Ltd (Thomas Rose & Co), Sunderland, and renamed GLENSIDE. 1965 – Sold to G & M Amiridakis, Greece, and renamed MICHAEL A. 1974 – Sold to A. Kokkinidis, Piraeus, and renamed ELENITSA K. She “foundered” off Fleves Island, south of Glyfada, on 29 September 1983.
