Trowel

Ceremonial trowel presented to Mrs Raina Grwsener by the Merthyr Hebrew Congregation on the occasion of the consecration of the Jewish cemetery extension at Cefn Coed, 27 October 1935. Inscribed: 'Presented to Mrs GRWSENER by the MERTHYR Hebrew CONGREGATION on the occasion of CONSECRATION of the CEMETERY OCT 27th 1935'.

The Jewish cemetery at Cefn Coed was established and consecrated in 1865. It was one of the largest in Wales outside of Cardiff, serving the Jewish communities in Merthyr Tydfil and Dowlais. Mrs Grwsener, a member of the Merthyr Tydfil Hebrew Congregation, was instrumental in getting the new cemetery section built.
