Louisa, Countess of Liverpool (1767-1821)

NOLLEKENS, Joseph (1737-1823)

Lady Louisa Theodosia Hervey was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Bristol. She married Robert Banks Jenkinson, who succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Liverpool in 1808 and was Prime Minister from 1812-1827. Nollekens was one of the most distinguished British sculptors of the generation just before John Gibson and was highly regarded for his portraits. This bust draws on both classical and baroque precedents to create an image which suited the sitter's character. The simple design and tousled hair are particularly characteristic of Nollekens's busts after 1800.
